Idea and Vodafone follow Airtel, slash 3G rates by up to 70 per cent
Idea Cellular and Vodafone India on Tuesday slashed 3G data plan rates by up to 70%, bringing them in line with Bharti Airtel which had cut tariffs for the high-speed data services on mobiles last week.
The industry's response to Bharti's tariff revision kicks off a price war in the 3G space that had remained dormant for nearly 18 months since these services were launched.
Idea cut 3G tariffs by up to 70% while the Indian arm of British telco Vodafone Plc, pruned monthly rentals on its 3G promo packs by a peak 33% in a bid to drive market penetration and shore up revenues.
But even as the 3G turf finally heats up, the number of customers using 3G services across the country remains around a modest 20 million, below 2% of the GSM subscriber base
